Kempsey schools invited to the first ever Kookaburra Cup
Five weeks of schools basketball at Melville High. Entries close Thursday 24 September.
Something new is starting in Kempsey this term.
The Kookaburra Cup is a schools basketball competition, running across five weeks of Term 4 at Melville High School, and it is open to every school in the Shire. Four rounds, then finals in week five, and one cup going home with somebody.
It has never been run before. Which means whichever school takes it out first will be the one everybody else is chasing next year.
Two nights, two competitions
Primary schools play Tuesdays. Starting 20 October, 4:00pm to 6:00pm. Teams may be mixed, and girls and boys teams can be formed where numbers allow.
High schools play Mondays. Under 14 Boys, Under 14 Girls, Open Boys and Open Girls. We will confirm the start date and time shortly.
Both run at Melville High School, South Kempsey.
Never played? That is the point
Plenty of students will walk in on week one having never held a basketball. That is exactly who this is built for.
Coaches help players learn as they go. There is no experience required, no trial to get through, and nothing to bring but a pair of shoes.
No team at your school? Register anyway
This is the bit worth reading twice.
If your school cannot field a full team, register on your own. We will place you into a side. Nobody misses out because their school was short on numbers.
Schools entering a full team are asked to supply their own jerseys, along with a manager and a coach. Stuck for a coach? Get in touch and we will see what we can do. We would rather hear from you early than have a team miss out.
Why we are running it
Kempsey Basketball Association exists to create opportunities for local kids, and a schools competition reaches students who are not yet playing club basketball.
For some of them it will be five weeks of fun with their mates and nothing more. For others it becomes the way in to Wednesday night basketball, and eventually a Kookaburras singlet.
